How to take care of your Swedish clog sandals…

…or any other Swedish wooden clogs?

With summer around the corner, it's time to unbox your favorite Swedish clog sandals and give them some love before the summer season begins.

Here we come up with some tips and basic rules on how to take care of the pair of women’s clog sandals. Because their sole is always made of wood, taking care of Swedish clogs is a little different from the advice that applies to other types of shoes.

First things first: wooden soles

Clog sandals for women have a wooden sole that is lacquered on the sides and has naturally untreated wood on the footbed. The easiest way to clean the wooden bottoms of your wooden clog sandals is to wipe the dirt with a damp cloth and allow the sandals to dry at normal temperature (around 20 degrees Celsius). If wet cloth is not enough, try to clean them with little soap.

Most of the bottoms of women’s sandals are varnished. Although that offers some protection from water or rain, if they get too wet, it’s important to give them some extra care.

Let your clog sandals dry at room temperature and don’t try to speed up the drying of the wood by putting them somewhere hot. In this situation, it’s best to fill them with a newspaper or kitchen towel and leave them overnight to completely dry.

Whatever you do, always do it carefully. Wood is a living material and it should be handled with love.

Women’s clogs sandals and different leather uppers

How to take care of the leather depends on what kind of leather your Swedish wooden clog sandals are made of.

A pair of Swedish clogs for women in suede or nubuck leather is best to brush with a nubuck and suede brush to remove stains on the surface of the leather.

After the recommendation is to apply special nubuck and suede spray that will provide a layer of protection. For the best results, apply the spray when the clogs are new.

Clog sandals in pull-up leather must be handled carefully.  The pull-up leathers are treated with oils and waxes after being dyed which gives the leather a beautiful two-tone effect. There are many cleaning products and creams made specifically for oily and greased leathers, but it’s best to ask your shoe repair shop to recommend your product for this type of leather.

Many types of clogs for women are made of pigmented or patent leathers, which means that they can easily be wiped off with a damp cloth. If that does not work, try soap and water on the spots of dirt.

Be careful when you try any new product (cleaning, cream, wax products…) for the first time. Always test any new product on a small hidden part of the clog, or leathers in black and other darker colors. These products can sometimes give the leather a darker tone, so it’s good to keep in mind when you try them on your clog sandals.

Of course, these tips apply not only to clog sandals for women but also to any type of clogs for women and men, as well as other leather shoes.

Repair your wooden clog sandals to wear them longer

Follow these basic few rules on how to take care of your Swedish wooden clog sandals for women and be sure you’ll them for many years. Conserving and repairing is the most beautiful, sustainable, and economical way of holding on to your favorite pair of comfortable clogs.

SHOE FASHION FORWARD: MEN’S CLOGS

For more than a century, Swedish clogs have been well-known for their comfort, support, and unique craftsmanship. Some of the models have been in production for decades, gaining loyal customers worldwide. Unique craftsmanship, as well as lasting and nailing machinery and techniques that have been developed through generations of Swedish shoemakers, ensure ultimate fit and shape retention as well as the distinctive Swedish clog look.
Traditionally, wooden clogs were worn by both sexes, in Sweden, as well in other parts of Europe.  However, it wasn’t until the 1970s and 1980s that it became acceptable for men to wear clogs in more formal settings. What used to be considered a novelty and avant-garde, is now a social norm. Men wearing wooden clogs are far more commonplace these days.
Men’s clogs come in a variety of different styles and shapes. Traditionally, Swedish clogs are made in natural leather and wood, but you’ll find styles in canvas or vegan leather, too. The variety of prints and details can be overwhelmingly large, ensuring that everyone finds something he likes. For those who prefer the traditional look and want to focus on comfort and quality, some of the classic Swedish clog models are probably the best option.
Wooden clogs are very comfortable and can be easily worn both in and out of the house. They have a relaxed slip-on fit and wooden sole that provides support for feet and ankles. Traditional Swedish clogs have streamlined shape, anatomically shaped sole, and minimal details. The most recognizable part of clogs is their natural wooden sole. The footbeds of Swedish clogs have been developed over the years to even weight distribution across the foot, providing an optimal angle for support and posture. Traditionally made in alderwood, a type of wood known for its natural antibacterial foot climate and great moist absorption, wooden footbeds provide a safe and healthy solution for one’s feet. Because of this, wooden clogs are especially popular among doctors, nurses, chefs, and all professionals who spend long working hours on their feet.
Because men’s clogs are inherently casual, it’s best to choose clothes that will stay in the same lane. Try them with wide or straight fit pants paired with interesting printed socks and a simple minimalistic shirt, and you are ready for brunch, coffee with friends, or picnic. These days, clogs are becoming more popular as casual office footwear as well.
Taking care of wooden clogs is one of their biggest benefits. The most important thing to remember is If the wooden bottoms get wet allow them to dry slowly. Wipe clogs clean and leave them in a dry place at room temperature. Do not try to speed up the drying process by heating as that could cause the wood to crack. Taking care of leather upper depends on the type of leather your Swedish clogs are made of (nubuck, waxy, suede, pull-up, vegetable-tanned, etc.). There are many cleaning products and creams on the market, and it’s best to ask for advice in shoe repair shops. When you try the new product always test it on a small hidden part of men’s clogs.
Men’s clogs may not be a new trend, but the style can still be confusing for some men. But those who can pull it off know there are many benefits, including comfortability, easy on and off, and many materials and styles. Classic clogs, boots, sandals, closed-back clogs, work clogs - when it comes to Swedish wooden clogs, the varieties are almost endless.

How to Strike The Right Sartorial Balance with Clogs?

Women!! Are you on a quest for the perfect ensemble for your feet?? Guess what!! We have got you covered. Say hello to clogs. The uber cool and immaculately crafted wooden shoes makes the right noise with fashion geeks and limelight-hungry celebs.

Having its roots in Sweden, clogs had a rather simple childhood. They were foot-bearers of peasants and mill workers. The tough wooden built of the clogs protected their feet during their arduous endeavors. Having lost their relevance during the mid-70s, clogs sprang back to prominence riding on the glam quotient of elite brands like Victor Rolf and Chanel.

Don’t be surprised if you chance upon these reincarnated sartorial pieces in every fashionista's wardrobe. Clogs have added sparkle to every outfit and women can’t stop gushing about them. Be it with a one-piece or a jeans and top combo or any dress whatsoever, clogs teamed up effortlessly with all. A sheer handmade craftsmanship, clogs are equipped with high-quality, carefully treated wooden soles and premium leather uppers which inflate the style factor of these vintage pieces.

We can’t help but mention that the surge of clogs amongst the fashion spectrum has irked the footwear fraternity. Stilettos, ballerinas, which were once the pump of choice of elite women have gone the mundane route. They were stylish and had an oomph factor but they weren't comfortable. Here’s where clogs took the wind out of their sails.

Clogs for women are ergonomically built. The bottom of the shoe is shaped in an upward curve to form an arch for superior comfort. Glide your feet into one of those masterpieces and you will feel a change in your stance. Walk or run in them and you will experience no buckling or wobbling of your feet. They provide excellent ankle support and fit the foot properly to minimize stress on the feet, back and knees. Need we say more why women are in awe for clogs.

Clogs come on the expensive side though. So what!! Life is too short to fuss about loosening your purse strings when you have confessed your love for clogs. Sometimes a guilty pleasure is worth the money spent.

Brief History of Clogs and their Popularity as Nursing Shoes Today

Fashion is always undergoing changes. What has today caught the fancy of one and all happens to be backless slip-on shoes for women which are better known as clogs. Historically, clogs were renowned for their heavy soles and the usage of sturdy materials. They were worn by factory workers, farmers, and miners as a form of protective footwear in Scandinavia. The popularity replicated itself very quickly in the Netherlands where they started to be worn as well.

Even though such shoes are mostly associated with the Scandinavian countries, wooden shoes have been worn throughout the British Isles, Europe and the Mediterranean areas such as Greece and Italy. They also became highly popular at the time of the Industrial Revolution as a protective shoe for the workers.

During the wars of the twentieth century, the governments of a majority of the countries in Europe urged its citizens to wear wooden shoes due to a deficiency in the supply of leather. These efforts, however, proved to be unsuccessful as the wooden shoes still continued to be viewed as footwear for the working classes.

In the United States, these shoes became popular when in the 1960’s William School introduced a therapeutic footwear with a wooden base. A decade later, these shoes also known as clogs became a fashion trend after being worn by the group Abba.

Today even though clogs retain the look of the shoes which were available in the 70’s, the materials used have undergone some change. Today apart from wood, rubber and other synthetic materials are also used when making clogs so that they are able to withstand the effects of heat and water. These shoes are now available in a wide variety of colors for women.

Even though uppers made of leather are available, rubber clogs have gained widespread popularity, especially with nurses as they can be cleaned very easily. Operating room personnel have used clogs for a long time as they cannot wear any other footwear for such long hours. The rubber provides day long support and a firm foundation for weak arches and plantar fasciitis. They also help an individual stand straight as they take the pressure off the lower back.

Clogs, because of their ability to provide immense durability and improved durability have become highly popular amongst medical professionals and the general population alike.

Women’s Clogs - Defying Conventional Standards of Footwear Fashion

Women’s footwear is often associated with sleek designs and feminine structuring- take the example of stilettos, they are sleek, pointy, uncomfortable and constricting.

Since centuries, women’s clothes and even their shoes have been designed to make women fit into the set standards of beauty and perfection. There were corsets that helped women achieve a tiny waist, sometimes even at the cost of their health, and there were shoes that would make the feet sore for days after being worn.

Thankfully, in the present time, such superficial standards have been done away with and perfection is more about being in one’s own skin.

Of late, clogs have come to be the go-to shoes for the women of today. They are versatile, comfortable and chunky- the best combination to define the temperament of the ladies whose feet they adorn.

Women’s clogs are more about functionality and performance and are not defined by their femininity. They are durable and can keep the wearer comfortable for hours at a stretch, even when the wearer needs to be active on her feet throughout the day.

Ideally made of wood, leather and PU, clogs are perfect as work shoes. Nurses, chefs and professionals serving in the hospitality sector are seen to swear by clogs.

Some models of women’s clogs come with a padded insole that can double up the comfort factor of these shoes and also provide a more customized fit for all feet sizes and shapes.

Clogs come in a variety of styles- there are completely closed ones, there are slip on clog shoes that have an open back and there are the open sandals that come with straps.

Women’s clogs are usually heeled, with the bottoms and heels made from the wood of alder and lime trees. The wood is dehydrated so that the wood is capable of absorbing moisture from the feet. This means that all traces of sweat are absorbed and the feet stay dry and comfortable.

Clogs are great shoes to be worn for casual outings as well- just slip them on and you are good to go.

My First Experience with Clogs for Women

I had seen my friends wear clogs, but I had never bought a pair for myself.
It was not like I disliked them; I just didn’t think they could possibly match the level of comfort provided by my trusty leather heels. And I have a penchant to buy things only when I need them.

Last year, I went on a holiday to England with my friends. One of the cities we visited was Manchester, a city famous for heavy rainfall. I had packed multiple sets of clothes, accessories and shoes for our 5 day trip.

On our second day, when we took to the streets of Manchester, I didn’t realize it had rained heavily the night before and wore my leather heels. Needless to say, the shoes were fully drenched due to the water on the streets.

Thankfully, I had two extra pairs, but neither of them were water-resistant. I didn’t want to ruin any of them as the rains showed no signs of stopping anytime soon. My friends didn’t have to go through the same ordeal as me as they had brought their clogs for the trip. The clogs that my friends wore had a wooden base that was water-resistant, which allowed them to move around freely irrespective of the weather.

I decided it was the right time to get a pair of clogs for myself.

We went to a shopping district in lower Manchester to look for clogs. I was not even sure if they sold clogs in England.
One of my friends finally found us a retro-looking shoe store.

Thankfully, the store had a good collection of clogs for women.

As there were a lot of designs and colors to choose from, we spent nearly an hour in there.
Even my friends bought a pair each.

After coming back from our trip, I added a few more pairs of clogs to my collection of shoes, each with a different color to match my outfits.

Handy Tips for Taking Care of Your Wooden Clogs

Wooden clogs are one in all the best styles of shoes in existence. They’re durable, they're beautiful, they're comfortable and they simply go in conjunction with any kind of dress. I do know a lot of ladies who are yearning to own a closet full of only one form of footwear – wooden clogs. This may come as no surprise, but women love their clogs. And envy others’.  Nothing else in this world feels nearly as good as slipping your feet inside a gorgeous pair of wooden clogs.

Women are hooked in to their wooden clog sandals, and wear them to every occasion. And although clogs are one among the sturdiest shoes ever, they may still need a little care every now and then. And that’s not too much to ask for, considering that the lives of so many women revolve around their clogs. Therefore in order to prolong the lifetime of your wooden clogs you need to take care of them. This process can be ugly but the results would be even prettier than the shoes themselves.

Avoid contact with water – Water doesn’t harm the functionality of the wooden clog sandals. However, it's not very preferable to go out in rain with your wooden clogs on. Don’t, just don’t let your wooden clogs get in contact with raindrops. Water doesn’t affect the shoes promptly. However with constant exposure to that, wooden clogs can stretch out that makes them slightly uncomfortable.

Let them dry – notwithstanding your wooden clog sandals do get wet, don’t place them in direct daylight. Simply allow them to dry slowly and naturally, otherwise you run the chance of cracking the wood.

Use sandpapers – If you notice the inevitable scuffs on your wooden clog sandals, do not, I repeat do not clean them water. Use sandpapers instead. Sand papers work like magic on wooden clogs and can remove dirt very easily.

Use olive oil – you can use a spoonful of olive oil so as to make your shoes moisture-resistant and repel the dirt. Use a towel to scrub off the shoes. This is often also useful for maintaining the shine of wooden clogs.

Wooden clog sandals are still shoes. And it’s only natural for them to get dirty and wear out. But if you want them to last long, don’t wear them every single day. I know that's a little tough when they look so beautiful.

How to Keep Your Wooden Clogs Away From Wear And Tear?

Wooden clogs will never go out of fashion.  No matter how trendy they look, they still need to be taken care of as the wood may get damaged anytime if it knocked into something. When it comes to the ankle straps, the buckle must be opened while taking the shoe on or off to prevent any deformation in the shape of the leather strap.

To maintain the resistance of the natural leather to moisture and dirt, small amount of oil or other leather product can be applied depending on the type leather. It can help in giving the leather a darker tone that enhance its look. The clogs made from such leather can be put out in the sun to produce a tanning effect which looks equally good. If the wood is not varnished or stained, a small amount of olive oil can also be applied to the soles to make them resistive to moisture and dirt.

How to clean your wooden clogs?

The best way to clean women wooden clogs is to use a damp cloth, or even soap water. A light sand paper can also effectively take care of the scratches and dents.

Also the wooden clogs consist of open grains that help to drive out excessive moisture from the wood. This is why you can have a pat dry feet and a comfortable experience with women wooden clogs. So it becomes all the more necessary to let the clogs dry slowly as hurrying up the process can cause the wood to crack.

The type of leather used must also be considered

1.       Leather with a natural sheen

These kind of leathers are very easy to clean as they have a smooth finish. A damp cloth must be used to get rid of any dirt on the leather.

2.       Nubuck & Suede:

Here again you should use a damp cloth to remove the surface dirt. Having done that, go for Nubuck & Swede to remove the persisting stains on the surface of the leather. A better option is to go for a spray to insulate the outer layer of the leather from stains and dirt. For attaining best results, try it when the wooden clogs are brand new.
